Medical image compression is essential for huge database storage in various hospitals and data transfer for diagnosis. Wavelets give one such approach for compression purpose. A wavelet is a wave-like oscillation with an amplitude starts from zero, increases, and then decreases again to zero. Compression techniques are divided into lossless and lossy techniques. Lossless technique involves exact reconstruction of image but poor compression ratio. Lossy technique gives higher compression ratio. This paper outlines wavelets, wavelets families, types of compression techniques
