Modelling and Performance Analysis of Grid Connected PMSG Based Wind Turbine

G.Jothi Priya

Wind Energy Conversions Systems(WECS) has gained importance in the recent years as a prime source of distributed generation, in which variable speed wind turbine with direct driven PMSG and power electronic interface is the most commonly used system exhibiting variability in the output power as a result of change in the prime mover(wind speed). When such a configuration is interconnected to the grid it introduces various challenges to the network in terms of power quality issues, stability and voltage regulation. To study these issues MATLAB/SIMULINKSimpower system is used to model an IEEE 13 bus balanced industrial distribution system as a test case,to which a PMSG is connected as a local plant distribution system. A novel vector control mechanism is used for control of both MSC and GSC of PMSG wind turbine to achieve integrated control of maximum power extraction, reactive power and grid voltage support control. This paper will examine these system integration issues associated with wind generator and also shows that direct vector control structure of PMSG system has excellent performance in various aspects.
